Ultimate Distributed Compuing
As Oleg Nikolaenko is being charged of operating a 500,000 nodes botnet or darknet contributing 2/3 of the world's spam email (http://bbc.in/eLAdx2), there're actually million nodes botnets out there awaiting
instructions to do good things or bad. DDOS attack is one such good use. These nodes can be your PC at home or office, your broadband router at home, AP, WIFI, and your mobile phone. A lot of financial and political implications indeed are there.
I'm always a big fan of distributed computing. Current or future botnet that runs on smart phone platform could prove to be the ultimate distributed botnet platform, P2P, stealth, and obviously mobile. Proper use of Botnet finds its way into managing a large number of smart devices, self-healing, and completely fault tolerant. I gave a talk in the 90's over software agent potentials in biz use but so far finds the technologies used more in the dark side of it, so called Darknets.
From a security point of view, beware. The ultimate security you can assure yourself of is to operate from within your own botnet hide yourself up in parallel with an imperfect world. End-to-end is the key strategy. Using the same stealth agent technologies in the right way help protect your IT assets.
